2 hour from central Jakarta, the school Sekolah Alam Cikeas is there. The kindergarten and elementary school which offer kids to learn from great environment, nature. In the large land of 3.5 ha which is designed so that the children can have 15 m circle for each
Ms Indra Director and Mr Bharata head of research and development gave us school tour for us. There are school farm kids could grow crops. They also collaborate with villagers who has farm close to the school in which the children can grow rice and harvest it. The class building is Saung: the traditional wooden house of Indonesia

After the school tour we interview them. Mr Bharata talked about the ideal environment of education.
"Children can learn from every thing. They learn from outside, field. Each child have their own way to learn, if child want to learn dancing, we let them do it. If child want to play drum during the class we let them do it. Each one of child has their own way to learn "

As Doni said children could learn form their environment and Sekolah Alam allow them to do it. For example, children spend 70% of the school hour out side and study 30% of the time indoor. As I mentioned above the school surrounded by nature. The children naturally find what they interested in from this environment that is not artificial but art of nature.

To achieve their ideal environment for children, Sekolah Alam does interviews when they decide whether they accept the children or not.
Doni said changing adults is so difficult compare to changing children. He said they choose not by children but by parents.

I was quite surprised at this comment because that is exactly what we discussed about changing structure of social issues. I think once we used to traditional way, it is too hard for people to change the habits. There will be fear to change even if people notice the traditional way of living is not comfortable and sustainable at all. That is why education is so important to reduce the barrier to change the society.

I was deeply moved by the concept of Sekolah Alam Cikeas, and what they said about social change. They are conscious that how difficult to change the way people used to. However, there are this brightness of hope that they believe what they do in education is work gradually. This might be the characteristic of Indonesian or not, we could learn this attitude from them.
